Refrigeration compressors

Refrigeration compressors are an important component of any refrigeration system. They convert the refrigerant in saturated vapour state to superheated state. There are various types of compressors used for refrigeration.

They include reciprocating compressors, centrifugal compressors, scroll compressors, screw compressors, vane compressors, etc.

Reciprocating refrigeration compressors have pistons moving inside a cylinder in an up and down fashion. They have the advantage of ability to create high compression ratios but suffer from noise and low efficiency. Centrifugal compressors use radial flow of vapour for compression.

They have blades mounted on a rotating shaft that create the radial flow. They can handle large volume of vapour but the compression ratio is low.

As reciprocating compressors using pistons and valves are noisy, they are being replaced by scroll compressors.

The latter consist of 2 spiral shaped members that fit into each other. One of them remains stationary while the second rotates around it. The refrigerant vapour is sucked into the centre of the scroll increasing the pressure. The compression is continuous, smooth, efficient and quiet.

Scroll compressors are durable and more efficient than reciprocating compressors. They are widely used as refrigeration compressors.

Depending on the type of application, like white goods, mobile refrigeration, light commercial refrigeration, commercial refrigeration, air conditioning etc. and the type of refrigerant used the right compressor with the right capacity needs to be chosen for a given application.

For example, for mobile applications, small DC hermetic compressors are used while large scroll compressors do the job for large commercial air conditioning or industrial application.

Refrigeration compressors that operate both with both Direct Current (9.6V to 31.5 V) and Alternating Current (85 VAC to 265 VAC, 50 / 60 Hz) are available.

The system automatically detects the type of input power. The DC only compressors are used in refrigerators as well as freezers and are preferred for mobile applications. Dual voltage compressors operating in 12V and 24V function with solar panels also as the source of power. They are protected against overload and destructive battery discharge by electronic circuits. These DC refrigeration compressors are also used for comfort cooling systems in trucks to provide a comfortable environment for drivers during resting etc.

The IR liquid level sensors are impervious to the hardness or the conductivity of liquid. Hence they can be used anywhere in the world under any environment as it is without requiring any special fine tuning. The output switching can be delayed programmatically in these liquid level sensors depending on application.
The delay times increase the reliability of sensor output, drastically cutting down false alarms. They are particularly useful in case of single sensor applications and in case of instability in liquid levels due to the presence of waves, bubbles, foam etc.

There is a wide variety of these electro optic systems available suited to diverse needs. Apart from general purpose liquid level sensors made
of plastic material, there are also metallic switches suitable for heavy duty industrial applications. These are made of corrosion resistant stainless steel. They can withstand harsh environments involving high temperature, pressure, vibration or shock.
The plastic liquid level sensors are normally made of 2 types of plastic materials.

The polysulphone plastic is resistant to mineral acids, alkali, salt solutions, detergents, hydrocarbon oils, alcohol solutions, steam, and hot water. They are suitable for food and medical use. To increase the mechanical strength, polysulphone is reinforced with fiber glass for use with
lubricant oils and diesel.
They can operate in the -20 °C to 85 °C temperature range and can work with DC as well as AC power.

These liquid level sensors are also integrated with thermostat units that monitor not only the liquid level but also its temperature.
The output can be on-off digital signals as well as proportional 4 to 20mA analogue signal in case of temperature. The threshold limits are programmable to suit customer’s needs. The high pressure and temperature IR liquid level sensors can monitor liquid levels in pressure vessels with pressures up to 150 bar and temperatures up to 125 °C. They consist of strong glass prism fused to stainless steel housing.

Another type of these electro optic systems is explosion proof liquid level sensors.


These liquid level sensors are designed for explosive environment and can work in direct contact with hydrocarbons, diesel, and other explosive liquids. They are Eex IIC T6 certified units and suitable for vapor recovery system, fuel tanks, pumps etc. The liquid level sensors can be of either normally open type or normally closed type depending on the application. The former is open in air and closed in presence of liquids while the latter is closed in air and open in presence of liquids.


Finally we have IR liquid level sensors suitable for refrigeration and HVAC applications. They can be used to monitor refrigerated liquid levels and in CO2 monitoring systems. Apart from sensors, Teklab also manufacture liquid level controllers suitable for use with compressors etc. They monitor the oil level in compressor crankcase and inject oil when required. If the desired oil level is not reached after a preset time interval, the unit raises an alarm that can disable the compressor.
